あるメダル寄付者からのメール：

息子が最近骨髄移植の手術を受け、その際にM４Mからマリーンコープマラソン（注釈：参加申し込み２時間半で売り切れのアメリカで大人気の「海兵隊マラソン」）のメダルを頂きました。この頂いたメダルは、私の父が第二次世界大戦の時に海兵隊員だったこともあり、特別に意味を持つものとなりました。感謝の気持ちを込めて、２００１年のボストンマラソンの私のメダルを一つ寄付させて頂きます。どなたかの喜びにつながれば光栄です。

My son recently underwent a bone marrow transplant and received a Marine Corps Marathon medal from Medals 4 Mettle. That medal was especially meaningful to us since my father was a Marine in WWII and I ran the 1978 Marine Corps Marathon while he proudly watched.  Therefore, I decided to donate my 2001 Boston Marathon medal for someone else to enjoy.

(10/28/2013)　＊＊　国立子供病院で入院中の子供たちにメダルが渡されました。

今日は大成功でした！

今日は７つのメダルをあげました。

チャイルドライフ・チーム（の子供たち）の分は来週だと言われました。

今日、メダルを受け取った子供たちは、全員、本当に喜んでいました。

本当に素晴らしい経験です。

みなさんがここにいらしたら、と思います。

また将来にはもっともっとたくさんのメダルをあげましょう！

Today went so well!!

We gave out 7 medals- we have the remainder to give to the child life team for this coming week.

ALL of the patients that received one were so thrilled.  Really was an amazing experience.

I hope all of you can come and we can give out more in the future. 

Carmen was AMAZING!!  What a joy it was to work with her.  She is a keeper!!

乳児のお母さんからの手紙 A letter from a mother of infant

(10/8/12) M4Mのドクター・アイゼンバーグに来た手紙。

アイゼンバーグ先生、

昨日の、イースト・テネシー・バデイー・ウォークでメダルを寄付して下さってありがとうございました。私にとっては、１月に娘がダウン症として生まれてから、初めてのバディー・ウォークへの参加でした。娘はダウン症だけえはなくて、心臓疾患も抱えております。先日、テネシー大学病院の乳児集中治療室で、心臓を開いてペースメーカーを埋め込む手術が行われました。その後、一ヶ月に渡り、ヴァンダビルド子供病院では栄養を送るためのチューブのための手術もありました。そんなわけでしたので、昨日のバディー・ウォークへの参加は、私たちにはやっと自分たちの来た道を祝うことができる大切な日となりました。色々な人が、お互いに声を掛け合って励まし合い、きっとこのイベントがなければ通り過ぎて行くだけであろう方々と生きることの真摯さを再確認するという自分には信じられないようなステキな午後でした。ミス・Mと一緒にこのバディー・ウォークに参加できたことは私たち家族には、一つの分岐点となりました。M４Mのみなさん、ありがとうございます。おかげさまで、私はこの日のことは一生絶対に忘れないでしょう。みなさんに本当にありがとうが言いたいです。そして、大切なメダルを私の子供のような人たちに寄付してくださったアスリートのみなさんにも感謝します。言葉では言い表せないステキな贈り物です。ありがとうございました。

Dear Mr. Isenberg,

I just wanted to thank you for your organization’s donation of medals to the East Tennessee Buddy Walk that took place yesterday.  This was our first Buddy Walk as our daughter was born in January with Down Syndrome and a congestive heart defect.  After three weeks in the NICU at UT Hospital followed by Open Heart Surgery, surgery to give her a pacemaker, surgery to insert a feeding tube and over a month at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital doing all of this, yesterday was our BIG DAY to CELEBRATE!  It was an incredible afternoon of people coming together to recognize and encourage these precious individuals who give us an outlook on life that we otherwise probably would have missed.  Given our journey with our dear Miss M, this was truly a milestone for our family.  Thanks to your organization, we now have a keepsake that will help us to forever remember this day.  Thank you for all you do and for the many athletes who so generously donate their medals to honor our little ones.  It is truly such a gift.

ヘルシンキに渡ったメダル A letter about Helsinki boy

(8/3/12) M４Mのプレジデントのシャランさんに来たメール。

こんにちは、J　と申します。コロラド州在住で、小学校１、２年生の教員をしています。ちょっとしたきっかけで、フィンランドのヘルシンキ在住のMさんという高校の先生と知り合いになりました。Mさんは、自分の仕事が終わった後、治る見込みのない病気の子供たちの教員ボランティアとして、病院に通っています。Mさんと私はEメールで話しているのですが、O くんという６歳の男の子について話してくれました。O くんは入院生活が２年になるのですが、まず経済的に恵まれないご家庭の９人の子供の末っ子であること、そして、ご家族は病院から非常に離れた場所に住んでいて、誰もO くんのお見舞いに全然来られないそうです。Mさんと、病院でO くんを担当している方が、今はO くんが本当の家族のようなものだそうです。そんな話を聞いていたある日、あるランニング雑誌でM４Mの活動のことを私は目にしました。そして、M４Mのリボンを購入して、自分が走ったマラソンのメダルにつけてO くんにあげました。私の走ったレースは、コロラド州のマウント・エバンスの山岳レースで、15マイル（24km）の距離を4000ft (1200m) の高低差、一気に14,200ft (4328m)の頂上まで走る全米で一番高所でのロードレースです。完走してメダルを貰ったとき、すごく嬉しかったです。なので、O くんへの贈り物として、もしかしてぴったりではないかと思いました。Mさんから聞いたのは、彼女がO くんにリボンのついたメダルを渡した時、O くんにとってはそれが彼の世界の全てだったようだということです。O くんは、起きている時にも寝ている時にもそれを身につけていたそうです。

悲しいことに、O くんは先週天国に旅立って行きました。Mさんは、O くんの旅立ちを見守りました。Mさんがおっしゃるには、O くんはMさんに手を握られて、安らかな微笑みをたたえていたそうです。そして、もう一つの手には、メダルが握られていました。その後、O くんは、メダルを首にかけて、お墓に入りました。

私の小さな完走メダルがこの男の子に与えたインパクトを前に、考えたことがあります。それは、私とMさんがしたことを、他のヘルシンキの子供の患者さんたちにもできないのか、と。Mさんが言うには、彼女の病院の子供たちの多くは、貧困家庭の出身で、大げさではなく何も所有しているものがない状態だそうです。プラスチックのゴミ袋やTシャツをもらうだけでも大興奮だということ。O くんが亡くなり、次にMさんが病院を訪問したとき、O くんのいたベッドには、次の死を待つ子供が入床していたそうです。残念なことに、病気の子供は絶えることがありません。

なので、もしもできたら、M４Mの活動をヘルシンキでも広げられたらな、と思います。何か情報を頂いて、私とMさんとで、活動が始められのかどうか検討したいと思っておりますが、いかがでしょうか。

My name is J, I live in Louisville, Co, and am a 1st and 2nd grade teacher. I've come to know a high school teacher in Helsinki, M, who after teaching all day, goes to a hospital to be a volunteer teacher for young, terminally ill kiddos. We've been emailing each other and she's told about about one of her little students, O, who is 6. He'd been in the hospital for 2 years and due to the fact that he's the youngest of nine kids from a very poor family who lives a long way away in Lapland, none of his family has ever been able to visit. M, as well as his caregivers at the hospital, really are his only family. After reading about Medals4Medals in one of my running magazines, I ordered one of your fabulous ribbons and attached it to a medal I'd recently received for running the Mt. Evans Ascent here in Colorado. It was 15 miles and ascended 4000 vertical feet, ending at 14,200 ft. It's the highest road race in North America. I was proud of finishing and receiving a medal for my effort....and it seemed the perfect thing to send to O! M said when she gave the medal and ribbon to O, it meant the world to him. He wore it day and night.

Sadly, O passed away last week...     M was with him. She said he died smiling, holding her hand. In his other hand he held his medal. He was buried with it around his neck.

Hearing about the impact that one little medal had on one brave little boy really got me thinking about trying to extend what M and I had done for O, to her other student/patients.

M says that most of her hospital students do come from poor families and have absolutely nothing! She said they are ecstatic to receive something as simple as a plastic grocery bag or a t-shirt. When she went back to the hospital a few days ago, there was already another sick child in the bed O had been in. Unfortunately, as you well know, there are always more kiddos coming.

So, I'd like to get more information from you and see if it's feasible for M and me to try extending Medals4Mettle into yet another country.
